Key Points:
- Top tier talents
- Fixed term contracts
- Contacts
- Cost savings
Now more than ever, we’re seeing the rise of the contractor! In an uncertain market it’s the ideal time to bring in a contractor to help with the portions of your business that you only need help with on a project or as need basis.
Using contractors for portions of your business can give you access to a range of the top tiered unique talents while not locking into a top tier annual salary or contracts, essentially giving you more bang for your buck right from the start as you can lock them in for a fixed term or as needed contract.
Getting the right person for the job is key and in the long run will save both time and money. So often you see jobs given to someone already on the payroll that really aren’t in their domain or area of expertise so they may not have the skills or the background knowledge to make the project a success, having to learn along the way and taking twice as long to get it done – time that they might not have to begin with. Getting a contractor with a range of skills in their wheelhouse can save you money, even on a contractor’s slightly higher hourly rate the cost of 10 hours of an employee or 5 hours of a contractor may work out as a cost saving measure as well as letting your staff focus on their core role.
A contractor’s very own Yellow Pages will have a range of contacts that they can leverage to get the best deal for you whether it be speakers, branding, printing, venue or suppliers. The price that a contractor can get with their wholesale contacts will usually blow what companies can get for a one-off job out of the water. You may only need 1 sign made for your project but a contractor will have arranged 10-20 of them through other jobs and can use that history to get you the best deal.
Let’s also mention less paperwork! Once the agreement is signed the only paperwork you will need to deal with will be their invoices, no PAYE or Kiwi Saver admin, streamlining the process. Many contractors will also work at a reduced price for a locked in longer term contract if it is a guaranteed income for a few months at a time.
Contractors aren’t just for one off projects, they can also come in and cover temporary fixed term roles, staff cover while away on holidays, sick leave or parental leave and overflow during your busy season keeping your operation running in tip top shape. They also have some flexibility in their hours and their turn-around time to be able to start depending on what other projects they may be committed to.
All in all, using a contractor as and when you need them versus hiring an employee will save you time, save you money and will ensure that you end up with a more professional and successful result.
